Challenge #1

The Icebreaker Challenge: Introduce yourself. Tell us why you're doing the challenge, and what you hope to gain from it.

I'm Hannah wherever I can manage it, and I don't know if I'm a fandom old yet or if I got into fandom young enough I've just been around for a long time. I've certainly been doing this challenge a while, and I admit I look forward to it every year - it's a good way to ease into a new calendar cycle and, as a bonus, I usually pick up a couple new people to talk to before it's over. Because talking to people is the biggest reason I've stayed around this long.

Missing for 200 Years, the Galapagos Rail Reappears Following Floreana Island Restoration

Centuries after they were made famous by Charles Darwin, and a century after they had become plagued by invasive rats and cats, the Galapagos Islands are well on their way to recovery.

Few events could better capture that recovery than the recent reappearance of the beautiful blue Galapagos rail, a bird which hadn’t been seen on Floreana island for 200 years.

After almost a decade of preparatory work, invasive rats, avian vampire flies, and domesticated cats were eradicated from the island thanks to the close coordination of several conservation groups from around the world working alongside the Galapagos National Park Directorate.

Restoration projects often foster the revival of rare species, or those believed to be extirpated or extinct. It's not often this dramatic, so this is exciting news.

Today is partly cloudy and chilly.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a large mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 1/2/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 1/2/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

I've seen at least 4 male cardinals chasing each other around the trees, along with 2 squirrels.

EDIT 1/2/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

I am done for the night.

Today's theme is Most Useful Communities. These are communities with popular topics and plenty of activity, that often come up in searches, and thus make it easy to find fun things to do or new friends to meet. There are other highly useful communities that may not have come up in my searches, so if you'd like to suggest more, leave a comment. For more ideas see [community profile] followfriday and the Follow Friday Master Post of thematic community lists.

Note that this post is sorted by topics, so a few communities appear more than once.

Love Death + Robots "The Other Large Thing" S4 E05 2025 Full Episode

This anthology show is hit-or-miss. Some episodes are meh, some cringeworthy, but the hits are among the best science fiction ever created. This is one of the best. It's a cautionary tale, and if you know cats ... disturbingly plausible. Also hilarious. Do not watch with mouth full.

I adore the pairing, too, such a memorable set: Dingleberry Jones and his minion Thumb Bringer.

2026 Intro Post

Name: Remy

Age: 41, turning 42 this month

I mostly post about: My daily life and mental struggles, with some occasional political commentary, and I link to my book, movie, and streaming television reviews, not to mention a fantasy novel I've been trying to type up from my notebooks for ages. I do a lot of AI art and use them in original memes as well.

My hobbies are: Reading (more nonfiction today than before), writing, streaming television, and AI art. I used to be heavily into gaming but haven't played in a while, but I may next year depending upon my mental health.

My fandoms are: Formerly furry--I got off that sinking ship last year--though I still like anthropomorphic art--and I don't do fandoms anymore.

I'm looking to meet people who: Validate me and respect my unique perspective.

My posting schedule tends to be: Daily.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: I'm not a very big fan of Woke and gender ideology, or anti-AI people.

Before adding me, you should know: I am autistic, but have pretty much disowned my own people, really struggling mentally, incredibly PTSD from decades of trauma from my family and 18 years of psychiatric abuse, not to mention pretty much every online community I was ever part of.

Vocabulary: Permacomputing

Permacomputing (noun)

Permacomputing is both a concept and a community of practice oriented around issues of resilience and regenerativity in computer and network technology inspired by permaculture.

There are huge environmental and societal issues in today's computing, and permacomputing specifically wants to challenge them in the same way as permaculture has challenged industrial agriculture. With that said, permacomputing is an anti-capitalist political project. It is driven by several strands of anarchism, decoloniality, intersectional feminism, post-marxism, degrowth, ecologism.

Permacomputing is also a utopian ideal that needs a lot of rethinking, rebuilding and technical design work to put in practice. This is why a lot of material on this wiki is highly technical

Name: Lots of them. Mainly Saros, Venus, Maggie, Andi, or Sewa. Pick your favorite. Or just call me sewagelag00n.

Age: 20

I mostly post about: My daily life, some stuff about my hexperiences regarding "mental health"/Madness. Occasionally I'll talk about media I've been into.

My hobbies are: Selfshipping! DIY alternative fashion, customizing clothes & making jewelry. Ballet. Writing & art. Doll collecting. Soft toys.

My fandoms are: Some Sword/Some Play (18+)! A very obscure little game that I love so much I've basically adopted one of the characters as my OC. Please I am so abnormal about these lesbians. Longtime Vocaloid fan, I think I'm coming up on 9 years now. I love Hatsune Miku (she's literally me) and recently Teto SynthV has captured my heart. Recently got back into FNaF (my favorite is Mangle!). Very normal about Neon Genesis Evangelion. Huge music nerd: love digital hardcore like Ada Rook, but also into stuff under the goth umbrella, industrial, shoegaze, new wave... I like a little bit of everything.

I'm looking to meet people who: Honestly, just looking for more interaction. People who post regularly and will comment on my posts.

My posting schedule tends to be: Usually every couple of days, but can be more sporadic.

When I add people, my dealbreakers are: Those who follow Abrahamic religions. I am a staunch antitheist and do not think highly of religious people. Other religious/spiritual people are on thin ice. Transmisogynists, racists, sanists, homophobes, other bigots.

Before adding me, you should know: My blog is very much 18+ and viewer discretion advised because I am into a lot of dark and sexual things. I am Mad and hexperience things like plurality (one of my alters sometimes posts on this account too) and self-harm and intense mood swings. I am very critical of the psychiatric system. I am actually not a lesbian. I really want my URL to be sewagelag00n instead but I don't want to pay $15 for a rename token. I am polyamorous and have 3 real-life partners and a whole host of fictional ones.

Exoplanets

NASA’s Webb telescope just discovered one of the weirdest planets ever

A newly discovered exoplanet is rewriting the rules of what planets can be. Orbiting a city-sized neutron star, this Jupiter-mass world has a bizarre carbon-rich atmosphere filled with soot clouds and possibly diamonds at its core. Its extreme gravity stretches it into a lemon shape, and it completes a full orbit in under eight hours. Scientists are stunned — no known theory explains how such a planet could exist.

Sounds fun. Anybody want to set a story there? I miss when new scientific discoveries spawned a flood of stories.

Attending a New Year's Eve party with my parents and their friends that doubled as one of the friend's birthdays had me the youngest in the room. By multiple decades, in most cases. It was fun, for all that - I talked to some very old-school socialists about addiction, definitions of fascism, public transportation, architecture, technical versus technological, and made a few people laugh.

I should reach back out to the host and thank him for the invitation again.
